97 dakota 3.9L V6 with only over 80,000 on the auto transmission. Wondering if anyone could help me out in Diagnosing the problems I am having. ane) Sometimes the vehicle will start off in second gear instead of first. All shift points beyond that work fine and are polish, simply it will not even down shift into first when i downward shift manually or come to a stop. 2)The truck starts off in commencement just fine but will get stuck in outset gear or second and will not shift to the side by side gear. It does not flare the gears it just won't shift. Strange thing though, if I put the vehicle in N and then turn off and plow back on the transmission will shift normal over again. All instances of failures occur at dissimilar intervals, i would say one-four times a week. Could this be input sensors, valve body, trans controller. I am Poor and don't want to pay for a new trany please help with any suggestion.

I had a problem with my tranny when I first got my truck. It was slipping in betwixt 2nd and 3rd, just this but happened when it was cold. The problem was the shifting cable, the case mounting commodities that holds the cable to the tranny had backed out and wasn't holding the tranny fully in the D position. Also you say that it won't shift into kickoff. That is your torque convertor, information technology gets stuck in the locked position. I had this problem once crusade I really soaked my engine down with h2o and used my pressure sprayer under the truck. I had gotten the torque convertor connexion wet and information technology would not shift into showtime. The torque convertor wires are on the top of the tranny at the bellmouth housing and sew to the wire bundle around the distributor.

My 99 three.9 will not shift into 3rd when its still cold untill a few miles downward the route. I tin do at to the lowest degree 50 mph and information technology nevertheless won't shift into third. Oasis't tried whatever faster than that cause i don't desire to blow it upwards. Anyways, once its warmed upward fully, information technology shifts fine. The dealer told me the transmission needs to be overhauled simply i don't remember then. It seems like its some kind of valve or solenoid that is sticking when the tranny is cold. Any ideas guys?? I 'll accept to cheque the shift cable (which 1 are you talking well-nigh?? The gear shift cable or the throttle cable that goes into the tranny?

dudes,

i wish i posted this years before. my mechanic buddy from Dodge said that the first modernistic you should practice for your Dak is installing a trans libation. it makes the trans terminal forever. i installed a B and N trans libation. cost me about $35 and it was easy to install. that compared to hundreds of repair costs. simply my ii cents.

Just to let yall know, The tv cablevision has alot to do with how the shifts go on the dakotas and if it needs to be adjusted information technology is piece of cake, But when information technology messes upwardly information technology feels like the tranny is going out but realy information technology is that lil cable, I went to a tranny store and they said it needed to exist rebuilt, but i was testing them and i knew the problem could be fixed with a needle nose plier and your hand, he quoted me $1000, and then i left and went home and fixed the problem myself, information technology took me perhaps iii min, Man these tranny shops realy trie to rip people off hah, My advice is buy a book on dakota and yous volition learn alot of things that can realy save you large time.

Hullo,The problem I have with my 2000 dak is when it gets to 46mph and shift into overdrive it starts

to vibrate I tin feel information technology on the gas pedal. It started when I had about 1500 miles on it. I`ve had it at the dealers several times and been told that this is nomal, I`ve also been told that considering I had 350 pounds of sand in the bed [ weight for winter driving] that was causing the vibration. What skilful is apickup if you can`t comport that little fleck of weight ? I`ve also had the driveshaft changed and still have the vibration.Could someone tell me if your truck does the same thing

If yous people would accept researched the contrivance dakota before you bought it you lot would have noticed that dodge cant build an automatic tranny for sh*t. Their manual trannys are good though. I have a 99 Sport with the iii.9 merely it is 5-sped, it has 42,000 miles on information technology and i haven't had any problems yet.

A trans cooler won't fix the non shifting when it's common cold problem. I have one on my 92 and my grandfather said that the trany wouldn't shift out of first when information technology is cold from solar day one. Simply the trans has lasted 112K with no other bug. But I think that the main problem with your autos is Dodge made them.

Transmission problems (help)
IP: Logged

Message:
Okay, here's one that seems that nobody can figure out. I was driving my 91 dodg dak v6 3.9l two wheel drive. One day i was picking up speed when i heard a loud clank.
I pulled over thinking it was tranny. started driving again and when i reached 30mph the trucked gradually slowed downward. It did this a couple times and at present am thinking e brake. I checked out e restriction and that was fine. and then for a week or two my truck kept slowing down when i reached 30mph. Finally it just stopped and now it rpm'southward higher than usually about 2400/ 2500@60mph. and then i just drive 55 or 60 all the time. Delight help
Thanks, jp

Had the same prob. on a 2002 durango R/T. Just got it fixed under warranty today, actually... It was a transmission pressure sensor going bad, the pressure level would exist too high to downshift into first, and so it would often start out in 2nd, could possbly be your prob.

Two Words: KICKDOWN BANDS
Drain the fluid and replace the filter, while the pan is still off grab your Haynes transmission and read upwards on adjusting the kickdown bands. At that place are two: ane) To kickdown to lower gears when needed, and ii) To kicking the tranny into contrary when needed. Its relitively easy, you tighten two bolts and so back them out to the recommened turns. Ex: 1)1 1/4 turns out & two) 2 Turns out. After that my truck(98 Dakota 4x4 V6 Machine) was shifting like a gnaw. The cooler is a great idea.

Well, bought my 00 3.nine auto this weekend. It has 28000 miles on it as of today.

Yes it wont shift into OD until nearly 4 miles downwards the road if I hop onto the freeway right abroad (common cold Minnesota)
Seems to shift fine beyond that, but under a slight load in OD say around 1800 rpm, there is a very sligher harmonic hum that is bearly audible.
Let off the gas and it stops, higher rpm and its gone....my GF guessed maybe U-joints....dunno, non really bothering me, but its deffinatly in the bulldoze train, and a bit curious since I only bought the truck.
IDEAS?

Why is everyone having so much problems with their trucks with such low mileage on them? I have a 94 with 160000 miles on information technology and it all the same runs pretty much similar new. Although i was wondering what is going on when i start it upwardly subsequently its been sitting for several hours, i put it into drive, but when i press the gas, it doesn't want to move immediately.

Hey guys,

Yous should SERIOUSLY take my advice to heart. We all know that dodge tin't make a expert car trany. Only I love dodge, i love the dakotas, and i'll find a way to gear up annihilation they can't. And so here's my advice. I have a 97 4x4 dakota and it has most 145000 on it. I drive it about 110 miles a day to and from work. My trany has sliped more less from day 1 and I simply kept letting it go considering i knew that everyone had this problem with them. Simply finally when i would starting time information technology in the mornings and dorsum out of the driveway it would have a while to become into reverse and when information technology would, it would Vino and carry on realy bad! But every bit before long every bit it was warm, it was fine. So here'south what to try first. Get a trany flush, new fluid, and a filter. It'll cost about 75-80 bucks depending on where you go. DON'T go to dodge, they accuse about 100 or more. When i did this to my dakota it was shifting almosy normal. The next thing i did, and the guys from speedtweaks told me this, was I replaced the 2 sensors that are on the trany. The one is a magnetic blazon of sensor that collects crap in your fluid. All i know is that it was all full of crap. And then supersede them 2 sensors. Y'all tin do that at your ain place. The parts themselvs arn't exspensive at all. With doing the flush, and the sensors, I MIGHT accept spendt 200 bucks, i forget exactly how much the sensors were. You lot guys should really endeavour the smaller things first. ANY trany shop will say you need it torn apart and rebuilt even if its something simple. So anyways, i only wanted to attempt to assist you guys out alittle. Dont jump on a new or rebuilt trany unless y'all try niggling things first. And if anyone is getting upwardly in the miles with their truck, i'd get a flush anyway. You should see how nasty the filters on these things get.... so anyhow.. goodluck!!
